Slake Durability Apparatus is used in simulated weathering tests to determine abrasion resistance in wetting and drying cycles of shale and similar soft rocks in embankments and other construction-related applications. In the test, samples are alternately tumbled in mesh drums through a water medium and oven-dried for two cycles. The percent loss of mass is referred to as the Slake Durability Index.
The device consists of a double-ended motor drive unit that rotates two 5.5x3.9in (140x100mm) dia.xW sturdy wire mesh drums at 20rpm in water tanks. Two water tanks are included with the SA-80 and have built-in, quick-release drive units.
The 4ft (1.219m) long base accommodates two additional SAA-30 Water Tank and Drum Assemblies for increased productivity when testing. A set of two SAA-31 Wire Mesh Drums is also available separately to allow for more sample preparation.
